“HAPPY THANKSGIVING, Rose,” Emma said when she entered the kitchen.

“Thank you, Emma. Same to you.” Rose peeked at something in the oven, then turned to Emma. “I know a lot of women don’t like other women messing around in their kitchen, but Phil thought it would be okay if I got a jump on breakfast for you, considering how late you were up last night. He wanted you to get as much sleep as possible.”

“Where are the men?” Emma asked as she took a seat at the breakfast counter.

“Phil went to check on the animals at the ranch and Jeremiah went with him. Phil said to tell you that Granny is with him.”

Emma smiled. “That’s the ghost of an ancestor of mine. She adores Phil. She seldom misses a chance to tag along with him to the ranch.”

“I know. Jeremiah has told me all about Granny. Seems she helped him out on a case a few years ago. Around Christmas time, wasn’t it?”

Emma smiled, then gently touched her face as the movement hurt. “As Granny likes to say, she and Jeremiah are pals.”

Rose set a mug in front of Emma and filled it with coffee. “I found the recipe for that breakfast casserole you were planning on making and whipped it up for you. It looks delicious.”

“The way I feel today, I welcome the help. Thank you.” Emma pulled the mug closer and enjoyed the warmth on her bruised hands.

Rose grabbed her own coffee and joined Emma. “How are you doing today?”

Emma touched the large bandage on her cheek that covered the nasty scrape she got rolling around on the asphalt at the cemetery. “This stings, and so do the scrapes on my hands, but the real problem is the aches and pains. I feel as if I were in a car accident. I took something for it this morning.”

“I’m sure sorry you got hurt,” Rose said, “but I am glad that wasn’t Jeremiah rolling down the hill. At his age, his old bones would have broken into a hundred pieces.”

Emma chuckled. “He said the same thing to me at the Sheriff’s office last night.” She took a sip of her coffee. “I am so sorry I dragged Jeremiah off last night. It was hardly the thing a good hostess would do.”

Rose studied Emma’s face. “You didn’t drag him anywhere. He’s a grown man and makes his own decisions. He wanted to go. Besides, it gave me time to have a nice long chat with Phil about a few things.”

Emma’s interest moved from her coffee to Rose. “About the spirit stuff?”

“Yes. I asked him what it was like being married to someone who pursues such things. He was very candid with me, which I appreciated.”

“I know it’s not easy on Phil at times,” Emma admitted, “but he’s a good sport about it and assists me as much as he can. It helps that he now believes it’s real. That wasn’t always the case.”

“That’s a real good man you have there, Emma,” Rose said before taking a sip of her coffee.
